UK Box Office Top Ten - weekend commencing 03/04/09

UK box-office top ten for the weekend of Friday 3rd - Sunday 5th April 2009.

As expected, Dreamworks Animation's Monsters vs Aliens, which also screens in 3D, repeated last week's U.S. opening as it stormed to the top of the UK box office with a mighty haul of £4,345,711. Meanwhile, Richard Curtis comedy ensembled The Boat That Rocked - starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Gemma Arterton, Nick Frost and Kenneth Branagh - debuted in second with just north of £1.8m.

The two new releases pushed the rest of the last weekend's chart down two places apiece, with home-grown movies The Young Victoria and Lesbian Vampire Killers falling out of contention for a spot in the top ten. Marley & Me's 4-week haul of £12,354,340 means that the canine comedy remains the highest grossing release in the top ten, while Clint Eastwood thriller Gran Torino continues to have legs six weeks after opening.

The big release this coming Easter Weekend, Fast & Furious, sees Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Michelle Rodriguez return to the illegal street-racing franchise for a fourth instalment, but expect Monsters vs Aliens to cling on for pole-position. Also released is Dragonball Evolution, a live-action version of the Dragon Ball anime, along with François Truffaut's French classic The 400 Blows, which sees a limited reissue on Friday.
