The Twilight Saga: New Moon (UK release 20/11/09, cert. tbc).
The sequel to 2008's box-office hit Twilight, New Moon sees Robert Pattinson return as vampire Edward Cullen alongside Kirsten Stewart's Bella Swan in the second adaptation from Stephenie Meyer's hugely popular series of books. Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) takes over the director's chair vacated by Catherine Hardwicke, with British director David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night) currently at work on the third installment Eclipse, set for release next summer.
Paranormal Activity (UK release 27/11/09, cert. 15)
The $15,000 horror Paranormal Activity - the most profitable independent film ever after its North American release last month - has been labelled as the new Blair Witch Project, with first-time director Oren Peli shooting the film using hand-held video cameras in his own home. Championed by Steven Spielberg, Paranormal Activity will look to terrify audiences when it gets a UK release at the end of November.
Avatar (UK release 17/12/09, cert. tbc)
James Cameron's long-gestating sci-fi epic Avatar promises to deliver a 'new generation of special effects and a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind'. Fifteen years in development, we now have less than two months to see whether it makes good on that promise. The film stars Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation) as paralysed Marine Jake Sully, who is recruited for the Avatar Program on a distant outpost on Pandora, a planet populated by the native Na'vi. Given a mission to infiltrate the Na'vi, Jake finds himself taken in by the clan and learns to become one of them, rising to lead them in battle against the invading humans.
Invictus (UK release 05/02/10, cert. tbc)
Clint Eastwood's next directorial effort stars Morgan Freeman as South African President Nelson Mandela, in a biopic looking at Mandela's life after the fall of apartheid and during the 1995 Rugby World Cup. The film also stars Matt Damon as South African cup-winning captain Francois Pienaar, and is based on John Carlin's 2008 book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Made a Nation.
The Wolfman (UK release 12/02/10, cert. tbc)
Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, The Wolfman brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. From director Joe Johnston (Jumanji, Jurassic Park III), Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself.
