After the highs of last weekend's bumper UK box office, the festive crunch kicks in and Paranormal Activity - which opened last week in second place - ascends to the summit of rather mediocre chart. Oren Peli's ultra-low budget DIY horror has now grossed over £7m and with strong word of mouth (and weak competition for the time being) it should continue to inflate its fantastic return on investment over the coming weeks.
Also climbing one place to second (after five weeks on release) is Robert Zemeckis' mo-cap take on Dickens' A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey. The film continues to pull in the punters and has the potential to remain a fixture over the holiday period, although the impending Avatar will severely diminish the availability of 3D screens. Less likely to have such legs is The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which falls to third and looks to have exhausted most of its audience save for hardcore fans.
Elsewhere in the chart, animated family alien-adventure Planet 51 is the highest new release this weekend (and the only other film to break seven figures) placing fourth with £1.5m, while thriller Law Abiding Citizen just falls short of the mark in fifth. 2012 drops two spots to lead the bottom half of the chart ahead of Brit-comedy Nativity!, while the two other debutants - horrors The Box and The Descent: Part 2 - both opened to disappointing figures in eighth and ninth. Finally, Coen brothers' black comedy A Serious Man props up the chart once again, crossing the £1m mark in its third week.

Incoming...
Leading the pack and clear favourite to challenge for top spot this coming week is Spike Jonze's latest Where the Wild Things Are, an adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's fantasy. Also hitting our screens is crime-thriller The Limits of Control from writer-director Jim Jarmusch, while horror fans can look forward to Carriers (starring Star Trek's Chris Pine as the survivor of a virus outbreak) and lastest remake, The Stepfather.
