Produced by Hayao Miyazaki and his animation company Studio Ghibli, On Your Mark is a seven-minute fantasy music video made to accompany the 1995 song of the same name by Japanese pop duo Chage and Aska. Partly inspired by the Chernobyl disaster of 1986, the film is set in a futuristic world where radiation sickness and disease are rampant. It tells the story of two anti-terrorist policemen who discover a winged girl (described by Miyazaki as the "bird girl") during a raid on a religious cult. When scientists come and take the girl away, the two men risk their careers as they set out to free her from a life of experimentation.
Told in a non-linear form and without dialogue, On Your Mark is the acclaimed animation studio's best-known short and received a theatrical release in Japan alongside Ghibli's 1995 anime Whisper of the Heart.
