Arthur Christmas topples Twilight at the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 2nd - Sunday 4th December 2011...

Well, it's taken four weeks, but Aardman Animations' festive offering Arthur Christmas has finally climbed to the top of the UK box office, pulling in £1.89m to take the top spot from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, with the blockbuster vampire sequel slipping down to third after three weeks of dominating the chart. As with Robert Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol back in 2009, Arthur Christmas has enjoyed a strong run after getting off to a slow start and the CG-animated flick has now amassed £11.5m in receipts, and with the Christmas holidays fast approaching, that figure should continue to grow over the coming weeks.

After a disappointing run in North America, George Miller's Happy Feet Two enjoys a second-placed opening here in the UK, with its £1.68 opening making it the highest new entry of the week. Meanwhile Martin Scorsese's 3D family fantasy Hugo pulls in £1.22m to take fourth place behind Breaking Dawn - Part 1, with horror prequel / remake The Thing debuting in fifth with £485k from its opening weekend.

My Week with Marilyn slips three places from its opening last weekend to lead the bottom half of the chart in sixth, with The Adventures of Tintin suffering the same fate in seventh. Comedy 50/50 falls two places to eighth, followed by Immortals (down four to ninth), with the Daniel Craig / Rachel Weisz thriller Dream House propping up the chart in tenth.
