There were signs of a recovery at the UK box office this past weekend with four films managing to cross the £1m mark for the first time since August. Despite strong competition from Ricky Gervais' latest Hollywood comedy The Invention of Lying and a 3D reissue of the Pixar classic Toy Story, dance remake Fame stands atop the chart for the second week and now boasts an impressive £5.5m in total since its release. Falling just short of first by £50k was Gervais, with The Invention of Lying beating out previous effort Ghost Town in terms of its debut weekend with £1.74m (against Ghost Town's £1.35m), leaving Woody, Buzz and the gang to settle for third. Toy Story's return to cinemas might not have set the box office alight, but its arrival certainly impacted on 3D rivals Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - falling two places to fourth - and The Final Destination, which plummets from the top ten in its sixth week.
Sci-fi flicks Surrogates and District 9 also slip two places apiece to fifth and sixth ahead of newly released rival Pandorum, with Dennis Quaid's bad run of form continuing after summer flop G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. However nemesis Cobra Commander seems to be faring a little better, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt rom-com (500) Days of Summer continuing to add to its tally after five weeks on our screens.
At the foot of the chart highly rated music biopic The Soloist (from British director Joe Wright) falls five places to ninth, while family adventure Aliens in the Attic makes a return to the top ten in its eighth week of release.

Disney will be hoping that Pixar's new animation Up manages to draw in bigger grounds than Toy Story when it hits 3D screens on Friday, while horror-comedy Zombieland will duke it out with Rob Zombie remake sequel Halloween II for fans of blood and guts.
Also released this weekend is Shane Meadows' low budget mockumentary Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee, featuring Paddy, who stars as himself.
