Global box-office phenom Avatar returns to the summit of the UK chart in its third weekend, pulling in an impressive take of £5.94m (with almost £5m of that figure made up from 3D screens) to push its cumulative gross to £32,815,618 in just 17 days. Cameron's sci-fi epic has become only the fifth film to cross the billion-dollar mark worldwide and currently stands in fourth place behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and his previous effort, Titanic. It should have little difficulty in claiming second place and is beginning to look like it could mount a serious challenge for top spot, although with some $800m to go that may just prove a feat too far.
In a bumper weekend for cinemas (up 25% on 2009), Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes climbs one place to second with last week's number one Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel dropping to third, with both films doing healthy business in their second weeks and pushing past the £12m mark. New release Did You Hear About the Morgans? cracks fourth place with £1.15m while musical Nine climbs trades places with St Trinians 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold to enter the top half of the chart for the first time.
Elsewhere, comedy drama 3 Idiots drops three places to seventh and becomes the highest grossing Bollywood release of 2009, while Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy slips one spot to eighth ahead of The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Finally, animated family comedy Planet 51 climbs from 14th last weekend to re-enter the top ten at the foot of the chart.
