Low-budget horror The Last Exorcism managed to pull off a rather surprising victory against stiff competition from the likes of Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston to take the UK box office crown in its opening weekend. Although its chart-topping haul of £1.1m is far from earth shattering it certainly presents a decent return for the $1.8m-budgeted film, which has already made over $30m during its North American release.
In second place comedy remake Dinner for Schmucks pulls in just £940k, with almost £300k of that coming from preview screenings. This is considerably lower than the recent openings enjoyed by leads Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, while a sixth place debut for Jennifer Aniston's latest rom-com The Switch is surely a blow given the performance of recent hits The Bounty Hunter (2010) and Marley & Me (2008).
Turning to the familiar faces, Pixar's Toy Story 3 holds onto third in its seventh week on screens and edges ever closer to £70m (a feat that it will have achieved by now, making it only the second-ever film to reach that milestone after James Cameron's record-holder Avatar). Elsewhere last week's top two films - comedies Grown Ups and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - slip three places apiece to fourth and fifth, a fate also shared by The Expendables, Salt, Pirahna 3D and Inception, which fill out the chart from seventh down.
