World news has of course been dominated today by the announcement that Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in a U.S. special forces raid on his mansion / compound in Pakistan, bringing an end to a near-ten year manhunt for the terrorist mastermind. Now it appears that Hollywood is looking to capitalise on ith Deadline reporting that Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal - the Academy Award-winning director / screenwriter combo behind The Hurt Locker - are planning to follow this up with Kill Bin Laden, a thriller about an earlier attempt on his life as he hid out in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Further details about Kill Bin Laden are sketchy, although the director's reps have said that "this movie isn't specifically about the Al Qaeda leader". It is thought that Bigelow has been prepping the movie over the past few weeks with Joel Edgerton (Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, Animal Kingdom and the upcoming Warrior) tipped to star, and today's news is expected to see the project fast-tracked through development with funding already in place courtesy of producer Megan Ellison (True Grit).
Meanwhile it seems that 80s star Corey Feldman may have beaten the Hollywood studios to the punch with his latest indie Operation Belvis Bash, co-starring The Iron Shiek and Frank Stallone. "I was in New York on September 11, 2001, with Michael Jackson," Feldman told MovieLine, "and then, nearly ten years later, I walk out of the premiere of my latest film, which I had postponed to be able to attend Corey Haim’s Decisions premiere and memorial, to learn that Osama Bin Laden had been killed by a special operation, just like in the film we’d just screened."
