The much-hyped South African sci-fi thriller District 9 jumps straight in at number one on the back of strong word of mouth and internet buzz, with the modestly budgeted and Peter Jackson-produced effort bagging close to £2.3m. While these numbers hardly set the box office alight, the film has already proven to be a smash hit with a world-wide gross in excess of $115m on the back of its $30m budget. Last week's top film - 3D horror The Final Destination - continued to perform well, taking second place ahead of another new release (500) Days of Summer (which opened last Wednesday and collected £1.24m over the five day period) and overtaking the cumulative haul of Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, despite having been on screens a week less than the WW2 picture.Judd Apatow's Funny People continues to underperform, falling to fifth in its second week, while family comedys Aliens in the Attic and G-Force slip just one place apiece to sixth and eighth respectively. Sandwiched between them is The Time Traveler's Wife (down three places from last weekend), while in ninth Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince finally crosses the £50m barrier and overtakes Order of the Phoenix to become the third highest grossing film of the franchise on UK shores. Lastly, Pedro Amoldovar's Broken Embraces falls just 27% and props up the chart for the second consecutive week, while The Hurt Locker and GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra both fall from contention.

A number of new releases could see a shake-up in next weekend's chart; this coming Wednesday low-budget horror Sorority Row will be hoping to cut a chunk out of The Final Destination's audience but could struggle without the lure of that extra dimension, while Oscar Wilde adaptation Dorian Gray will also hope to make its mark on home soil. On Friday audiences can choose between comedies Adventureland (from Superbad director Greg Mottola) and Miss March, along with Meryl Streep's latest, culinary biopic Julie & Julia.
