The new school term impacted heavily on this week's UK box office, resulting in one of the poorest weekends in recent memory. Despite four new releases cracking the top ten only retaining champion District 9 managed to limp past the £1m mark, while 3D horror The Final Destination also holds on to second place in its third week against competition from rivals Dorian Gray (with the Brit film making £883,148 to place third) and low-budget horror remake Sorority Row in fourth.The two new releases push (500) Days of Summer down two places to prop up the top half of the chart, while Meryl Streep's new film - the biopic Julie & Julia - leads the rest in sixth. Quentin Tarantino WW2 flick Inglourious Basterds drops three to seventh and should cross the £10m mark before its run ends, while family adventure Aliens in the Attic fairs a little better, falling two places to eighth. Judd Apatow comedy Funny People continues its steep decline, sliding from fifth last week to wind up ninth ahead of another new release, Adventureland, from Superbad director Greg Mottola.
With smash hit Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince finally falling from the top ten after nine weeks in the cinema The Final Destination now stands as the highest earner, while Aliens in the Attic has spent the most weeks in the chart.

This coming Friday sees the release Academy Award winning director Sam Mendes' latest, the comedy-drama Away We Go starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph, along with Nick Love's remake of the classic 80's hooligan TV movie The Firm (check out our review). Also hitting screens is CG animation Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (featuring the voice talents of Bill Hader, Anna Farris, James Caan, Bruce Campbell, and Mr. T - fool!) and psychological thriller 31 North 62 East, about a British Prime Minister who gives up an SAS team in Afghanistan to push through a lucrative arms deal.
