Kung Fu Panda 2 chops its way to the top of the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 11th to Sunday 13th June 2011...

Kung Fu Panda 2For the fourth week in a row a new film debuts in top spot at the UK box office as DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda 2 opens with £6,188,897 (including £3.12m from previews), which is just a shade higher than the original managed when it arrived back in the summer of 2008. Meanwhile Todd Phillips' comedy sequel The Hangover Part II retains second place, pushing its total gross to £26.5m, with last week's top film X-Men: First Class falling two spots to third as it crosses the £10m mark after two weeks on screens.

Moving on and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides falls one place and adds another £1.58m to leave the fourth installment in the blockbuster Disney series pushing £30m, while dance sequel Honey 2 debuts in fifth place with £520k. Heading into the bottom half of the chart and Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules and Rio fall two places apiece to sixth and tenth respectively, while Senna and Ready slip one spot each to seventh and eighth. Finally, the newly-released horror flick Mother's Day opens in ninth, banking £94,385 from just 79 screens.

The big release this coming Friday is the third superhero offering of 2011 (and the first from DC), Green Lantern (cert. 12A), while other newcomers include comedies The Beaver (cert. 12A), Bad Teacher (cert. 15) and Swinging with the Finkels (cert. 15), along with vampire thriller Stake Land (cert. 15) and drama The Messenger (cert. 15).
