War Horse fends off Haywire and Underworld: Awakening at the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd January 2012...

Steven Spielberg's World War I drama War Horse holds onto pole position at the UK box office in its second weekend, romping home by several furlongs with £3.2m ahead of competition from new arrivals Haywire and Underworld: Awakening in second and third respectively. War Horse has grossed close to £9.6m in just ten days on screens, leaving it just short of the £10.4m amassed by The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn on its second weekend, although that figure was boosted by several days of preview screenings during the school holidays back in October.

In terms of the newcomers, Steven Soderbergh's Haywire banks just shy of £1.2m, while Kate Beckinsale's return to the Underworld franchise give the fourth installment a small boost over its predecessor, pulling in £1.1m compared to the £990k opening of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans back in 2009. Elsewhere, Jonah Hill's latest comedy The Sitter earns £910k to take sixth place, while fellow openers J. Edgar (£413k), W.E. (£163k) and Coriolanus (£157k) all fail to grab a spot in the top ten.

Turning to the familiar faces, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows drops one spot to fourth but continues to demonstrate its staying power as it pushes its total gross towards the £25m mark. Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady falls three to fifth, while Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol suffers the steepest decline of the week, dropping three spots to finish up in seventh. Meanwhile The Artist, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and Puss in Boots all slip one place each to occupy positions eight through ten.
