Toy Story 3 continues to dominate the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 30th July - Sunday 1st August 2010.

Pixar's latest animated classic Toy Story 3 continues to march into the UK record books with a fantastic £8.1m in its second weekend, giving the film £39.7m in just 14 days and making it the fastest to reach £40m (a figure it will have surpassed this past Monday). Toy Story 3 now stands as the third biggest animated hit in the UK behind Shrek 2 (2004) with £48.2m and Toy Story 2 (1999) on £44.3m, while it is second only to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland as the highest grossing release of the year so far.

Although no one could challenge the might of Woody, Buzz and friends, four new releases make their debut in the chart this weekend with two big 80s revivals battling it out as the main contenders. Both The Karate Kid and The A-Team enjoyed strong weekends but an two extra days of preview screenings gives the Jackie Chan - Jaden Smith martial arts reboot the advantage as The Karate Kid takes second with £4.8m, leaving The A-Team to claim third with £3.5m. Meanwhile at the opposite end of the chart music biopic Gainsbourg opens in eighth with £135k and Bollywood gangster flick Once Upon A Time in Mumbai props up the chart in tenth with receipts of £54k.

Elsewhere, Christopher Nolan sci-fi thriller Inception crosses the £20m mark after a healthy third weekend but slips two places to fourth with Dreamworks' Shrek Forever After falling just short of £30m overall in fifth. Both The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Predators tumble three apiece to sixth and ninth respectively, while The Rebound drops over 50% in its second weekend and takes seventh.

The drive to increase takings entertainment value with an extra dimension continues this week as two new 3D releases look to challenge the dominance of those folks at Pixar. Getting a two-day headstart when it is released this Wednesday is family adventure sequel Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (cert. U), while Friday sees the arrival of the latest entry in the popular dance franchise with Step Up 3D (cert. 12A). However, with Toy Story 3 storming its way into the record books and enjoying healthy business both sequels might struggle for screenings and I know who I'd put my money on in a three way dance.

2D isn't ignored completely this week with the other marquee release being the big-budget, heavily advertised action comedy Knight and Day (cert. 12A) starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Meanwhile on the world cinema front there's the choice between Bollywood romance Aisha (cert. TBC) and déjà vu biopic Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky (cert. 15).
