Toy Story 3 overtakes The Two Towers in the all-time UK box office chart

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 13th - Sunday 15th August 2010.

Despite competition in the form of two big-budget fantasy adventures Pixar's Toy Story 3 continues to take the UK box office by storm and holds on to first place for the fourth consecutive week. Raking in an incredible £58.9m to date, the animated smash hit now stands at number 7 in the UK's all-time top ten and looks set to break into the top five by next weekend. However, with current box office champ Avatar set for a re-release later this month the number one position seems a little out of reach for Woody, Buzz and the gang.

Having climbed from fourth to third last week, Christopher Nolan's Inception goes one further in its fifth weekend and takes second place with £1.6m, while the critically mauled 3D fantasy The Last Airbender (and hopefully The Last M. Night Shyamalamalan Movie, please) is hot on its heels in third with just £27k less. Tom Cruise / Cameron Diaz action comedy Knight and Day slips two spots after a second-placed opening last time out, with Disney's live-action The Sorcerer's Apprentice rounding out the top five with an opening haul of £1.1m.

Step Up 3D leads the bottom half of the chart and is just shy of £5m after two weeks while 80s reboots The Karate Kid and The A-Team occupy sixth and seventh with £10.6m and £8.9m respectively. Meanwhile 3D sequel Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore plunges four places to ninth, leaving Disney's Tinker Bell and The Great Fairy Rescue to bag the wooden spoon with an opening weekend of just £288k.

Incoming...

It's a veritable action bonanza this coming Wednesday as Angelina Jolie's Salt (cert. 12A) goes head-to-head with Sylvester Stallone and The Expendables (cert. 15) for the title of the August's Ultimate Action Hero (with decent preview takings on Saturday and Sunday gone, look for The Expendables to put up a good challenge against Toy Story 3). Meanwhile Fox will look to pry the family audience away from Toy Story 3 with comic strip adaptation Marmaduke (cert. U)... good luck with that.

If that isn't enough there are a couple more newcomers on Friday - horror remake Pirahna 3D (cert. TBC) and animation The Illusionist (cert. TBC) from Sylvian Chomet, director of the Academy Award-nominated Belleville Rendez-vous (The Triplets of Belleville).
