UK Box Office Top Ten - weekend commencing 16/07/10

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 16th - Sunday 18th July 2010.

Director Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster Inception jumps straight in at the top of the UK top ten, leading a chart dominated by the top three films with just short of £6m in receipts [be sure to check out our review, along with Trevor Hogg's comprehensive profile on Nolan's career-to-date Theatre of the Mind].

After enjoying the biggest opening of the year last time out, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse slips two places to third but manages to add another £3.4m to push its total gross beyond £22m in its second weekend (or third, if you count the advance screenings the previous Saturday and Sunday). Meanwhile Dreamworks' Shrek Forever After continues to do strong business with takings dropping a mere £300k from last weekend making it the highest grossing film in the top ten overall, but with Toy Story 3 now cutting into the number of available screens look for the big green ogre to slip down the chart over the next couple of weeks.

Along with Inception two other new faces make an appearance this week, albeit at the opposite end of the chart. First up is drama Leaving, which opened last week outside of the top ten and climbs to ninth this time out, followed by newly released classical music comedy Le Concert in tenth. With rom-com Heartbreaker holding onto seventh, we have three foreign language films in the chart for the second week in a row.

Elsewhere in the chart Predators, Get Him to the Greek and Killers all shuffle one place down to accommodate Inception, while Sex and the City 2 continues to show its legs but falls two places to eighth after the same number of weeks on release.

Number one this time last year: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

With Pixar's Toy Story 3, Brit horror Psychosis and 'anti-romantic comedy' Let The Game Begin all jumping the gun and hitting screens yesterday, there are only a couple of new releases on offer this coming Friday - the Catherine Zeta Jones / Justin Bartha rom-com The Rebound (cert. 15) and horror Splice (cert. 15) from Cube director Vincenzo Natali.

Look for Toy Story 3 to easily lay claim the top spot as it makes a challenge for the biggest UK opening of the year to date.
