UK Box Office - weekend commencing 02/07/10

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 2nd - Sunday 4th July 2010.

UK cinemas finally have something to celebrate after a disastrous last few weeks as Dreamworks Animation's Shrek Forever After registers the second biggest opening of the year behind Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and claims first place with £8.95m. This might have rejuvenated the UK box office somewhat but the fourth (and possibly final) instalment of the popular fairytale franchise has to settle with just over half the opening haul of the previous two movies, and with £3m of that made up from preview screenings from last weekend.

Two foreign language rom-coms also debut in the top ten this week with Bollywood's I Hate Luv Storys and French offering Heartbreaker opening in fifth and sixth respectively. Meanwhile the third entry in Stephenie Meyer's vampire romance series The Twilight Saga: Eclipse also pulled in an impressive £6m+ from two days of previews, which will be added to next weekend's figures and should 'eclipse' Alice in Wonderland to put it in pole position for the year to date.

As a result of the three new entries the top ten gets a bit of a shake-up with last week's top three films Get Him to the Greek, Killers and Sex and the City 2 all dropping one place apiece, with Prince of Persia tumbling three spots to seventh after six weeks on our screens. Ensemble comedy Death at a Funeral and horror The Collector both fall two places to eighth and ninth, while Woody Allen's Whatever Works climbs into the top ten after failing to chart when it opened last week.
