Battle: Los Angeles wins the fight for the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 11th - Sunday 13th March 2011.

It's all change at the top of the UK box office for the second week in a row as alien invasion flick Battle: Los Angeles debuts in first place with £1.79m, which - while less than stellar - is an improvment on the £1.63m that Rango led the chart with last time out. On the subject of Rango, the Gore Verbinski animated Western managed to retain most of its audience and pulls in another £1.5m to take second place, while Liam Neeson actioner Unknown holds firm in third and is the only other movie in the top ten this week to cross the seven-figure mark.

Along with Battle: Los Angeles there are two other newcomers in the chart, the highest of which is the Farrelly brothers comedy Hall Pass, which opens in fifth place with £900k. Less successful is Doug Liman's latest thriller Fair Game, pulling in just £304k in ninth despite the presence of Hollywood A-listers Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, while Hilary Swank's The Resident fails to make the top ten and gives Hammer Films a disappointing return of just £138k.

Turning to the familiar faces, the Matt Damon thriller The Adjustment Bureau is down two places to fourth while Tom Hooper's Best Picture winner The King's Speech slips one place to sixth and falls below seven figures for the first time in its run, although its cumulative gross of £43.25m sees it break into the all-time UK top 25 after 10 weeks on screens. Continuing on down the chart, Simon Pegg / Nick Frost comedy Paul falls to seventh ahead of CG-animation Gnomeo and Juliet, while Brit comedy sequel West is West props up the chart in tenth.

Incoming...

Apart from Matthew McConaughey thriller The Lincoln Lawyer (cert. 15), there's a distinct homegrown flavour to this week's new releases...

Wednesday sees the arrival of the Felicity Jones / Ed Westwick Chalet Girl (cert. 12A), while comedian Richard Ayoade (The Mighty Boosh, The IT Crowd) makes his feature directorial debut this Friday with Submarine (cert.15), a coming-of-age comedy-drama starring Craig Roberts, Sally Hawkins and Paddy Considine.

Friday also plays host to Anuvahood (cert. TBC), an "urban comedy" from Adam Deacon (Kidulthood), and there's also a cinematic release for Danny Boyle's National Theatre adaptation of Frankenstein (cert. 15), which stars Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch. Even Woody Allen is getting in on the act with his London-set comedy drama You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (cert. 12A).
