The Clash of the Newly-Released 3D Titans was decided by sword-and-sandal remake Clash of the Titans, which beats out Dreamworks' animated fantasy How To Train Your Dragon and takes top spot on a bumper Easter weekend with £5,682,875. Clash of the Titans was converted to 3D on the back of Avatar's success and with the film topping both the UK and US charts the decision looks to have been a wise one, while How To Train Your Dragon's £4.8m opening merely serves to confirm the format's increasing popularity.
No doubt we can all 'look forward' to a continued focus on the 3rd dimension in the coming months.
On the back of stellar reviews and 'cunt' controversy, Matthew Vaughn's superhero action-comedy Kick-Ass opens in third place with a respectable £3.8m and should solidify this with strong word-of-mouth and repeat business over the next few weeks. With the new releases leading the pack last week's number one Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang slips three, while Alice in Wonderland and The Blind Side both follow suit to occupy fifth and sixth respectively.
In the bottom half of the chart Robert Pattinson-Emelie De Ravin romance Remember Me fails to draw in the majority of the Twilight crowd but opens well with just under £1m (which in fairness is about £1m more than it should have) to claim seventh. Shutter Island and The Bounty Hunter both fall four places, while The Spy Next Door receives a stay of execution to claims the wooden spoon for tenth.
Number one this time last year: Monsters vs Aliens
