As expected Marvel Studios' latest superhero offering Iron Man II [read our review here] claims the number one spot in its debut weekend, banking £7.6m to kick off the summer blockbuster season with a bang. The original opened with £5.4m on its way to £22m overall and the sequel, which sees Robert Downey Jr. return as billionaire industrialist Tony Stark alongside newcomers Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson and Don Cheadle, will hope to exceed that figure before the competition really begins to heat up.
In addition to Iron Man II, two further new releases manage to make a splash this weekend with Miley Cyrus romance The Last Song taking fourth and Bollywood comedy House Full propping up the chart in tenth.
Dreamworks Animation's How To Train Your Dragon continues to perform well after five weeks on screens and moves up one place to second ahead of last week's top film, the Tina Fey - Steve Carell rom-com Date Night. Meanwhile 3D rival Clash of the Titans falls three places but remains the highest grossing film in the top ten with £19.2m.
Channing Tatum romantic war drama Dear John leads the bottom half of the chart and falls two places from last week, while Roman Polanski's political thriller The Ghost drops one place to finish seventh. Matthew Vaughn's superhero comedy Kick-Ass crosses the £10m mark but slips from fifth to eighth, while family fantasy Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang settles for ninth.
Number one this time last year: X-Men Origins: Wolverine
