Tom Hardy enters the world of MMA with Warrior

Tom Hardy WarriorGiven the popularity of the sport, its unsurprising that a slew of recent action films seem to be basing themselves in the world of mixed martials arts. While the majority of these are low-budget affairs (I'm looking at you, Circle of Pain), Lionsgate are hoping that the inclusion of star names such as Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) and Nick Nolte (Affliction, Hulk) will be enough to propel their latest action/drama Warrior into the mainstream.

Directed by Gavin O'Connor (Pride and Glory), Warrior sees Hardy as a rising MMA star on his way to the top, with his success putting him at odds with his estranged brother, played by Joel Edgerton (Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, Animal Kingdom).

Take a look at the synopsis and trailer below...
An ex-Marine haunted by a tragic past, Tommy Riordan (Hardy) returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh and enlists his father (Nolte), a recovered alcoholic and his former coach, to train him for an MMA tournament awarding the biggest purse in the history of the sport. As Tommy blazes a violent path towards the title prize, his brother, Brendan (Edgerton), a former MMA fighter unable to make ends meet as a public school teacher, returns to the amateur ring to provide for his family. Even though years have passed, recriminations and past betrayals keep Brendan bitterly estranged from both Tommy and his father. But when Brendan’s unlikely rise as an underdog sets him on a collision course with Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront the forces that tore them apart, all the while waging the most intense, winner-takes-all battle of their lives.

Warrior is set for release in the UK in September 2011. Visit the official UK Facebook page.
