Best Picture nominee Avatar may have dominated the UK box office for the umpteenth week but the real winner (and by winner, I mean excuse to talk about something different) is Lee Daniels' Precious, which opens in ninth with £260k from just 47 screens. The drama (based on the novel Push by Sapphire) is set to double this number in its second weekend and will look to climb the chart when the results are in next week.
Family comedy Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel returns to second place and edges ever closer to the £20m mark in its sixth week. The film has been slogging it out with Sherlock Holmes since their festive releases although the Guy Ritchie actioner has began its slide down the chart and finishes up fourth behind conspiracy thriller Edge of Reason, which sees Mel Gibson return to the screen for the first time since 2003's The Singing Detective.
It's Complicated holds onto fifth while Up in the Air (in competition with Avatar for Best Picture) drops two places to sixth. Toy Story 2 (in its second and final week of a special 3D re-release overshadowed by the dominance of Avatar in cinemas) and The Book of Eli also fall one place each to seventh and eighth respectively with vampire thriller Daybreakers propping up the chart in tenth.
