Avatar may have been knocked off its perch in the US this past weekend but it remains dominant on this side of the Atlantic and smashes the all-time UK box office record previously held by Mamma Mia. Cameron's epic has now banked £72m and even after two months on our screens it stands head and shoulders above the competition. £100m anyone? A number of new releases give this weekend's chart a shake-up with Disney's The Princess and the Frog leading the way in second place. Proving that there's still some life in traditional hand-drawn animation, the studio's 49th feature pulls in £2.2m - more than double that of computer-generated rival Astro Boy in third. Meanwhile moving on to live-action, Clint Eastwood's Nelson Mandela biopic Invictus places fourth with £1m and final new release Youth in Revolt opens in seventh with £743k.
Elsewhere in the chart Sherlock Holmes drops one place to fifth and pushes its gross to within inches of £25m, with Mel Gibson conspiracy thriller Edge of Darkness slips three to sixth. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel plummets six places as a result of new competition for the family audience but crosses the £20m mark overall, while It's Complicated and Up in the Air both fall four spots apiece to round out the chart (with £481k, Up in the Air becomes the highest grossing film to occupy tenth position for over a year).

The chart shake-up should continue next weekend with a number of new films released this coming Friday: Leading the way is horror-remake The Wolfman (directed by Joe Johnston and starring Benicio Del Toro as the cursed creature), while director Chris Columbus will be hoping to launch another franchise with fantasy adventure Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.
Also hitting screens are romantic comedy Valentine's Day, Colin Firth drama A Single Man, and Bollywood romance My Name is Khan, along with a limited re-releases for classics Letter From an Unknown Woman (1948) and Pretty Woman (1990).
