Avatar may have been knocked off its perch in the US this past weekend but it remains dominant on this side of the Atlantic and smashes the all-time UK box office record previously held by Mamma Mia. Cameron's epic has now banked £72m and even after two months on our screens it stands head and shoulders above the competition. £100m anyone?
A number of new releases give this weekend's chart a shake-up with Disney's The Princess and the Frog leading the way in second place. Proving that there's still some life in traditional hand-drawn animation, the studio's 49th feature pulls in £2.2m - more than double that of computer-generated rival Astro Boy in third. Meanwhile moving on to live-action, Clint Eastwood's Nelson Mandela biopic Invictus places fourth with £1m and final new release Youth in Revolt opens in seventh with £743k.
Elsewhere in the chart Sherlock Holmes drops one place to fifth and pushes its gross to within inches of £25m, with Mel Gibson conspiracy thriller Edge of Darkness slips three to sixth. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel plummets six places as a result of new competition for the family audience but crosses the £20m mark overall, while It's Complicated and Up in the Air both fall four spots apiece to round out the chart (with £481k, Up in the Air becomes the highest grossing film to occupy tenth position for over a year).
