Green Lantern dethrones Kung Fu Panda 2 at the UK box office... just

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 18th to Sunday 21st June 2011...

It may be one of the worst-reviewed superhero films since Pitof's Catwoman, but Warner Bros.' big budget DC adaptation Green Lantern debuts in top spot at the UK box office, with the Ryan Reynolds-starrer pulling in £2.47m from its opening weekend. Its hardly an earth-shattering haul though, with last week's number one film Kung Fu Panda 2 hot on its heels in second with £2.27m and fellow newcomer Bad Teacher taking third place with £1.95m.

Moving on and The Hangover Part II slips two places to fourth but adds another £1.5m to give the Todd Phillips comedy sequel an impressive UK gross of £29.4m to date; also falling two apiece are the summer blockbusters X-Men: First Class and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, with the Johnny Depp seafaring adventure now closing in on the $1b mark world-wide having overtaken Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 to break into the top ten highest earners of all time.

Heading towards the foot of the chart and racing documentary Senna holds firm in seventh, while family comedy Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules falls two places to eighth. French comedy Potiche opens in ninth with £201,588, leaving dance flick Honey 2 to prop up the chart in tenth after plummetting five spots from its fifth-placed debut last week.

Incoming...

A few of the big summer movies have hit cinemas over the past month but things slow down this week with the only notable release being the Judd Apatow-produced comedy Bridesmaids (cert. 15). Let's hope for a sunny weekend then.
