Russell Crowe to play Jor-El in Man of Steel

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder has chosen to follow the Richard Donner route of casting an Academy Award-winning actor to portray Jor-El in his upcoming Superman reboot. Variety has confirmed today that Russell Crowe is in final talks to step into the role of Superman's Kryptonian father, last portrayed by screen icon Marlon Brando, with the Gladiator actor securing the part amid competition from the likes of Sean Penn and Clive Owen.

Crowe, who will next be seen later this year in director RZA's The Man with the Iron Fists, joins a growing cast that includes Henry Cavill as Clark Kent / Superman, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Ma and Pa Kent. Dark Horizons are also reporting that Crowe's Gladiator co-star Connie Nielsen has an offer to play Jor-El's wife, Lara, while Harry Lennix (The Matrix Revolutions, State of Play) could be up for an unspecified supporting part.

Man of Steel is based on a story by David S. Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan, with Goyer handling scriptwriting duties. The film is expected to start filming later this year for a release at the back end of 2012.
