Joss Whedon adapts Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing

It has been announced that principal photography has been completed on a modern-day version of William Shakespeare’s comedy play Much Ado About Nothing, adapted and directed by Joss Whedon (Serenity) after he finished filming Marvel’s upcoming superhero extravaganza The Avengers.

Filmed on location in Santa Monica in just 12 days, Whedon’s project was shot in black-and-white and stars a number of actors who have worked with him before. Amy Acker (Angel, Dollhouse) and Alexis Denisof (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) play the lead roles Beatrice and Benedick, Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity) stars as Dogberry, Fran Kranz (Dollhouse) as Claudio, Reed Diamond (Dollhouse) as Don Pedro, Sean Maher (Firefly, Serenity) as Don John and Tom Lenk (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as Verges.

This adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing is the first film from Bellwether Pictures, a "micro-studio" created by Joss Whedon and Kai Cole for producing small DIY indie projects. The press release states that the film should be completed by early spring 2012 and then it will be heading to the festival circuit, “because it is fancy”.
