Yesterday, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner revealed details of the toy giant's upcoming movie projects, stating that: "We continue to actively develop a number of additional Hasbro films with great partners and writers, including Micronauts, Ouija, Candyland, Risk, Stretch Armstrong, Clue and Monopoly," whilst also announcing that Hasbro and partner Paramount Pictures are in discussions with Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg to secure their return for another Transformers movie. Variety later updated the story to suggest that Paramount were looking to follow the same strategy as The Matrix and Pirates of the Caribbean by shooting two sequels back-to-back, with Brit action star Jason Statham said to top the studio's list of replacements for the departing Shia LaBeouf.
Although the last Transformers movie, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, received mixed reviews at best, the third installment managed to pull in more than $1b in global receipts, so it should come as little surprise that the studio are keen to keep the franchise rolling. Despite the fact that director Michael Bay had earlier said the third outing would be his last, Bay is now expected to serve as executive producer alongside Spielberg, but Variety's sources claim he does have some interest in returning to the director's chair should he manage to complete his next effort, Pain and Gain, a black comedy set in the world of competitive bodybuilding and penned by Captain America: The First Avenger screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
Do you have any interest in seeing the Autobots and Decepticons duking it out on screen for a fourth (and fifth) time? Their last outing - which is now the fourth-highest grossing film of all-time - seemed to wrap everything up, so I'm not sure where scriptwriter Ehren Kruger could take the series next. Going by the old sequel adage of 'bigger and better', perhaps we'll finally get to see Unicron make the transition to the live-action series (along with the Dinobots?)...
