The UK box office recovered well after last weekend's disappointing returns as the Rowan Atkinson spy spoof Johnny English Reborn topped the chart with £4.96m, an improvement of more than £1.5m on the 2003 original, while Disney's 3D conversion of the animated classic The Lion King also managed to pull in the punters, banking £2.75m from the first week of its re-release to claim second place [read a Q&A with The Lion King co-directors Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers here].
As a result of the new entries at the top chart, last week's top two movies both slipped two places apiece, with the acclaimed espionage thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy adding another £1m in third and Taylor Lautner's latest, Abduction, pulling in £512k to settle for fourth. Meanwhile hot on their heels were another two newcomers - with the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror remake Don't Be Afraid of the Dark taking fifth with £495k and Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris opening in sixth with just £23 less.
Heading towards the bottom of the chart and Crazy, Stupid, Love drops three places to seventh, while the Ryan Gosling thriller Drive holds firm in eighth. Hit British comedy The Inbetweeners Movie drops two spots to ninth and pushes its cumulative gross just short of the £45m mark, leaving The Debt to cling onto tenth place in only its second week after plunging five places from last weekend.
