UK Box Office Top Ten - weekend commencing 26/02/10

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 26th - Sunday 28th February 2010.

Eleven weeks into its release the UK's highest grossing movie of all-time continues to lead the box office chart as Avatar pushes its total takings to £86,799,652. However, with Alice in Wonderland set to steal a host of 3D screens this Friday and 2D screenings making up just a fraction of the Avatar's audience, this could be the beginning of the end for Cameron's sci-fi juggernaut.

Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones climbs once place from its opening position last week to claim second ahead of the highest new release of the week, survival horror The Crazies. Disney's The Princess and the Frog slips to fourth and brings its total just shy of the £10m mark, while Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief remains static in fifth - a position it's held since opening three weekends back.

Along with The Crazies, two other new releases debut in the top ten but there's nothing to write home about as Amy Adams/Matthew Goode rom-com Leap Year and Travolta actioner From Paris With Love both disappoint in seventh and eighth respectively. However, both of these should be considered a success ahead of Harrison Ford's Extraordinary Measures (in 17th with £131k from ) and Robert De Niro's Everybody's Fine (21st with £68k). It's been a slow decline for these screen legends and on those kinds of numbers expect Indiana Jones V and Meet the Parents III any time soon (or December 2010 in the case of Little Fockers).

Elsewhere romantic comedy Valentine's Day edges closer to eight figures but falls two places finish sixth in its third week, while a BAFTA-winning Colin Firth returns to the top ten as A Serious Man climbs to ninth after disappearing last week. Finally, Mandela biopic Invictus slips one place to round out the chart in tenth.

Incoming...

The big new arrival this week is Tim Burton's 3D motion capture adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland (cert. PG) and with Disney having settled their disputes with the UK's leading cinema chains, the film should almost certainly bring Avatar's box office dominance to a halt.

Other new releases this coming Friday include horrors Legion (cert. 15) and Case 39 (cert. 15), Serbian zombie offering Zone of the Dead (cert. 18), Banksy documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop (cert. 15), romantic thriller Chloe (cert. 15), and a wide release for Crazy Heart (cert. 15), featuring an Oscar-nominated Jeff Bridges.
