UK Box Office Top Ten - weekend commencing 05/03/10

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 5th - Sunday 7th March 2010.

Disney must be relieved that it managed to come to terms with leading UK cinema chains over the proposed boycott of their latest film, the 3D Tim Burton adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, which storms to the top of the chart with an opening weekend of £10.5m.

Alice sets a new record for biggest 3D opening and also becomes the highest grossing film of 2010 so far. This caps a good week for the studio, with their animated offering The Princess and the Frog (down one to fifth) also breaking the £10m barrier midweek.

Unsurprisingly given the loss of most of its 3D screens, James Cameron's Avatar slips to second and fails to hit six figures, although its cumulative total of almost £89m will no doubt soften the blow. Meanwhile horror remake The Crazies remains in third with Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones slipping two spots to take fourth.

After a disappointing opening last week the Luc Besson produced From Paris With Love manages to climb two places to sixth, while Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief goes the other way and falls to seventh. Rom-coms Leap Year and Valentine's Day occupy eighth and ninth (with the latter having also crossed the £10m mark on Monday), with A Single Man propping up the chart in tenth.

The weekend's other new films (including
Case 39, Ondine, Legion and Chloe) all failed to make an impact in the chart, and a wide release for Crazy Heart (featuring an Academy Award winning Jeff Bridges) wasn't enough to propel it into the top ten.
