UK Box Office Top Ten - weekend commencing 12/03/10

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 12th - Sunday 14th March 2010.

After a bumper opening last week Disney's 3D live-action/animation hybrid Alice in Wonderland continues to set the UK box-office alight with a £7m plus haul to firmly retain the top spot in its second weekend. The Tim Burton film has amassed over £4m more than Avatar had at the same stage, although with a number of big-budget 3D releases in the pipeline it's unlikely to have any hope of similar staying power.

Four new films enter the chart this week to give the top ten a good shake-up... Martin Scorsese reunites with Leonardo DiCaprio for the mystery Shutter Island and places second with £2.25m, while Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon follow closely behind in third with the Iraq War actioner Green Zone. Richard Gere drama Hachi: A Dog's Tale banks £442k to claim fifth ahead of Swedish
thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which pulls in £378k from less than half the screens of any other film in the chart.

Avatar continues to push towards £90m but drops two places from last week to fourth and if it weren't for the loss of screens to accommodate Alice, one has to suppose it would have topped £100m (oh well, there's always the re-release). Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones is much less fortunate, earning less than £6m after a month on release and slipping to seventh, while horror remake The Crazies enjoys the biggest drop of the weekend as it plunges five places to eighth.

The Princess and the Frog and Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief also fall considerably but manage to cling on to a place in the chart, with From Paris With Love, Leap Year, Valentine's Day and A Single Man all slipping from contention.

Number one this time last year: Marley & Me

The main new release this week is the Jim Carrey - Ewan McGregor comedy-drama I Love You Phillip Morris (cert. 15), which opens this coming Wednesday. Another film to open midweek is the Jennifer Aniston / Gerard Butler action rom-com The Bounty Hunter (cert 12A), while a number of films land on Friday (although they're likely to struggle to make much of an impact in the top ten) including Brit comedy My Last Five Girlfriends (cert. 12A), family comedy Old Dogs (cert.
