Indie-credible: DVDs for Christmas

Emma Farley looks forward to Christmas with the latest edition of Indie-Credible...

Pickings are incredibly slim this week at the cinema for indie fans, what with the release of Harry Potter and all. But fear not, as Christmas is soon approaching and what better time to remind you of the must-have DVDs? So, if you’re writing your wishlist out to Santa or wondering what to buy the film geek in your life, check out my list of Ten Indie DVDs for Christmas 2010.

1. Kick-Ass: the film for anyone who dreams of being a superhero

“A ridiculously entertaining, perfectly paced, ultra-violent cinematic rush that kicks the places other movies struggle to reach.” - Chris Hewitt, Empire Magazine

2. Four Lions: for fans of black comedies

“The very existence of Four Lions is an act of audacity; the fact that it's also smart, humane, and frequently hilarious is nothing short of a miracle.” - Dana Stevens, Slant

3. The Runaways: for the feminist indie rock lover

“For the most part it works, thanks to painstaking recreations of hazy disco-era dive bars, faded roller rinks and seedy motels, plus a ballsy performance by Kristen Stewart.” - Jane Crowther, Total Film

4. The Graduate (BR): for those that love a good classic

Blu-ray extras include a documentary, an analysis of the seduction scene and a look at the musical influences.

5. The Killer Inside Me: for those that like their indies controversial

“This well crafted, excessively violent story lacks irony – but largely stays true to the 'dime-store Dostoevsky' whose characters it reveals” - Jonathan Romney, The Independent

6. Down Terrace: for fans of non-traditional British gangsta flicks

“Down Terrace is a Brit-gangster film that rarely feels like one – and is much the better for it.” - Rob James, Total Film

7. Leaving: for fans of French dramas – and Kristin Scott Thomas

“Another superb performance from Kristin Scott Thomas powers this intense, emotional French marital drama” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

8. Restrepo: for documentary film fans

“Anyone who thrilled to the rawness of The Hurt Locker will get a kick out of this documentary.” - Sukhdev Sandhu, The Telegraph

9. White Material: for indie lovers who like thought-provoking dramas

“Despite the film’s lack of surprises, Denis’ philosophical preoccupations persist, making her film an absorbing and wholly relevant social commentary open to much interpretation and debate.” - Lee Griffiths, Little White Lies

10. ?

No, I’m not being lazy. I want you guys to suggest the final film – what do you think is the must have indie DVD of the year? It can be anything as long as it has been released this year, whether it’s a new release or a special edition of an older film. Post your comments below.
