Cowboys & Aliens looks to revive the Western as first trailer hits

Check out the first trailer from Jon Favreau's upcoming sci-fi Western...

Ever since the disastrous reception of 1980's big-budget flop Heaven's Gate, Hollywood has been struggling with the Western. Sure, there have been critical successes such as the Oscar-winning Unforgiven (1991) and, more recently, well-received offerings such as 2007's 3:10 to Yuma and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, but in terms of bonafide blockbusters it's been a barren couple of decades. Attempts to bring the Western back to the mainstream has resulted in turkeys like Wild Wild West (1999) and Jonah Hex (2010), but now Iron Man director Jon Favreau is hoping to buck the trend with his next feature Cowboys & Aliens, set for release in Summer 2011.

Based on the 2006 graphic novel of the same name by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, Cowboys & Aliens features a stellar cast including Daniel Craig (Casino Royale), Harrison Ford (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy), Sam Rockwell (Moon), Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), Noah Ringer (The Last Airbender), Walton Goggins (Predators) and Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption).

Set in Arizona in 1873, Cowboys & Aliens follows Jake Lonergan (Craig), a gunslinger with no recollection of his past. Arriving in the town of Absolution, Lonergan comes into conflict with Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde (Ford), with the enemies having to form an uneasy alliance when the town is attacked by a mysterious force from the sky.
