Transformers: Dark of the Moon tops the UK box office chart

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 1st - Sunday 3rd July 2011...

We might have upset a load of Michael Bay fans with our review of Transformers: Dark of the Moon this past weekend, but they'll no doubt be pleased to see that the third installment has leapt straight in at the top of the UK chart with a mighty opening haul of £10.7m (including £4.23m of previews), surpassing both of its predecessors and pulling in over $400m at the global box office.

As a result of Transformers' arrival, last week's top film Bridesmaids slips down to second but still manages to bank an impressive £2m. Meanwhile Kung Fu Panda 2 afalls one place to third as Bad Teacher holds firm in fourth, with Tom Hanks rom-com Larry Crowne rounds out the top five with £346k from its opening weekend.

Heading into the bottom half of the chart, The Hangover Part II drops two places to sixth after six weeks on screens, with Green Lantern plummeting four spots and finishing up just one place ahead of superhero rival X-Men: First Class (which also falls two). Indian comedy Delhi Belly occupies ninth position with a debut haul of £155k, while Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides props up the chart in tenth after falling three places from last weekend.

Number one this time last year: Shrek Forever After

Incoming...

Terrence Malick's Palme d'Or winner The Tree of Life (cert. 12A) opens in cinemas this coming Friday, along with the long-delayed Holy Rollers (cert. 15) starring Jesse Eisenberg. Meanwhile, if you're a fan of Harry Potter, Cineworld are screening each of the installments over consecutive days, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (cert. PG) on Friday and running through to the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (cert. 12A) on the 15th. Might as well rake a few more pennies out of the franchise I suppose.
