Captain America is no match for Harry Potter at the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 29th - Sunday 31st July 2011...

Marvel Studios unleashed the final superhero film of the summer upon the UK this past Friday but Captain America: The First Avenger was unable to topple the reigning box office champ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, as the blockbuster sequel retained top spot in the chart with £4.57m in its third weekend.

The final Potter epic has now amassed £55.5m here in the UK after just 17 days, while its world-wide gross stands at an astonishing $1.01b. Meanwhile Captain America settled for second place with £2.98m, which is just under the debuts for Thor and X-Men: First Class if you strip out previews, and slightly ahead of Green Lanter's opening take. Nevertheless, Chris Evans' First Avenger is also the first superhero not to top the box office here in the UK in 2011.

Elsewhere in the chart, Pixar sequel Cars 2 and comedy Horrible Bosses both fall one spot apiece to occupy third and fourth place in their second weekend, ahead of new arrivals Horrid Henry: The Movie and The Zookeeper in fifth and sixth. Bridesmaids and Transformers: Dark of the Moon fall three places to slip into the bottom half of the chart, while The Guard and Beginners fare a little better as they drop two each to finish up in ninth and tenth respectively.

Number one this time last year: Toy Story 3
