Disney halts production on The Lone Ranger

Disney has called a halt to the production of it’s movie The Lone Ranger (which was scheduled for release in December 2012) due to budgetary concerns. Reports state that the studio wasn’t happy with the Western costing over $200m and even though the filmmakers tried to reduce the budget, it was still more than Disney wanted to spend.

The Gore Verbinksi-directed, Jerry Bruckheimer-produced film based on the classic TV show had Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, Edward Scissorhands) as the Native American Tonto and Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as the titular hero. Shooting was due to start this autumn but now the studio and filmmakers are trying to work out how to move forward with the project. They have a few possible options, which include bringing down the budget even further or offering it to a different studio.

It seems Disney has already invested in a number of other projects recently that require big financial backing, including John Carter and Oz: The Great and Powerful, and The Lone Ranger was the easiest one to put on ice for the time being. It’s more bad news for fans of the Western genre, after the anticipated Dark Tower adaption with Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Biutiful) was cancelled last month.
