Super 8 fails to dethrone Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 5th to Sunday 7th August 2011...

For the fourth consecutive weekend Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 tops the UK box office chart, adding a further £2.8m to beat off competition from new releases Super 8 and Mr Popper's Penguins. The eighth and final installment in the blockbuster wizarding series has now amassed £62.3m to take seventh place in the all-time UK chart. With the summer holidays in full swing, there's plenty of time for it to close the gap on Toy Story 3's £77m to become the second highest grossing film on these shores, although Avatar's all-time record of £94m will likely prove a step too far.

Moving on and the J.J. Abrams / Steven Spielberg team-up Super 8 pulled in £2.2m to take second place, ahead of the Jim Carrey family comedy Mr Popper's Penguins in third with £1.51m. Captain America: The First Avenger slips two places to fourth in its second week, dropping over 50% to pull in £1.4m, while Cars 2 rounds out the top five with £1.24m, giving the Pixar sequel a grand total of £11.3m to date.

In the bottom half of the chart, Horrible Bosses and Horrid Henry: The Movie also slip two places to sixth and seventh respectively, while Bridesmaids drops one place and continues to do well after seven weeks on screens. Less fortunate is The Zookeeper, which suffers the biggest fall of the week to finish up in ninth, while The Guard props up the chart in tenth and looks about set to slip from the top ten, although the film could return when it crosses the Irish Sea to open in UK cinemas on August 19th.

Number one this time last year: Toy Story 3

It looks like Harry Potter's last week atop the chart with another couple of big titles arriving this week. The Smurfs (cert. U) make their big-screen debut and will look to pull in the family crowd, with Rise of the Planet of the Apes (cert. 12A) likely to challenge the little blue fellas for the UK box office crown. Other newcomers include drama The Devil's Double (cert. 18), French rom-com Beautiful Lies (cert. 12A) and Brazilian thriller Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within (cert. TBC).
