Back in December last year the organisers of the Edinburgh International Film Festival announced that the event would undergo a dramatic overhaul for its 2011 programme, with traditional aspects of the festival such as red carpet premieres and jury prizes scrapped in favour of a complete 'reinvention' spearheaded by the creative trio of actress Tilda Swinton and former directors Mark Cousins and Lynda Miles. However, The Scotsman has reported that Swinton, Cousins and Miles have all now departed. "Our involvement ended when we submitted more than 100 ideas for the creative and artistic vision for the festival and we've not been involved since the middle of February", said Mr. Cousins. "We were all doing this unpaid and have busy lives. I'll be in the audience come June."
To further muddy matters, Swinton spoke to THR and claimed that her involvement in the EIFF was never official: "was never a part of such an initiative and I was clear from the start that I wanted this misinformation corrected by the festival. However, my understanding is that such a correction never took place."
Former music industry executive James Mullighan has been working hard since February to try and salvage the event, which is set to commence in June, and there are growing fears that the festival is currently months behind in its organisation and may have lost its way.
