Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have today confirmed that Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman reboot, now officially titled Man of Steel, has found its General Zod in the shape of character actor Michael Shannon, whose credits include 8 Mile, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Boardwalk Empire and an Academy Award-nominated turn in Revolutionary Road.
In a press release issued earlier today, Snyder spoke of the casting: “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”
The Kryptonian General, who was portrayed by Terence Stamp in both Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980), had long been rumoured to appear in the Christopher Nolan-produced reboot as the primary villain, with Viggo Mortensen thought to have been a favourite for the part. With Zod secured, one would presume the search is now on for accomplices Ursa and Non, with recent reports suggesting that Lindsay Lohan is under consideration for Zod's right-hand woman.
Shannon joins a growing cast that includes Henry Cavill as Clark Kent / Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent. Shooting is expected to commence this August for a release in late 2012.
