New live-action Mortal Kombat series gets a teaser trailer

Mortal Kombat LegacyAs you're no doubt aware, video game franchises haven’t quite got the best of track records when it comes to live-action adaptations. Some of the biggest selling games of all time have made the transfer to the big-screen with disastrous results; the majority - the likes of Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Wing Commander, DOA: Dead or Alive, and just about all of Uwe Boll's CV (House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne, In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale and Postal… shudder) - would make a pretty good list of the worst movies ever made, but that's not enough to dissuade director Kevin Tancharoen (Fame) from trying his hand at a new Mortal Kombat web series.

Entitled Mortal Kombat: Legacy, the 10 episode series is based on Tancharoen's unofficial short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, which was well received when it debuted online back in April of last year. The success of the short allowed Tancharoen to acquire the rights to produce an official series, with Warner Bros. confirming in January that the project had been given the green-light and would be released alongside the upcoming reboot of the video game later this month.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen any live-action Mortal Kombat, with Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 original followed by sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) and the utter shit-fest of a TV series, Mortal Kombat: Konquest in 1998. Rebirth was good, but something tells me this new series won’t be a flawless victory. Anyway, check out the teaser…

Mortal Kombat: Legacy stars Michael Jai White (Black Dynamite) as Jax, Jeri Ryan (Star Trek: Voyager) as Sonya Blade and Darren Shahlavi (300) as Kano, and the first episode will premiere on Machinima's Youtube channel on April 12th.
