Rise of the Planet of the Apes rises to the top of the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 12th - Sunday 14th August 2011...

After spending four weeks atop the UK box office chart Harry Potter is finally defeated as Rise of the Planet of the Apes jumps straight in at number one, banking a strong £5.8m to claim the crown in its opening weekend, which included £1.1m from Wednesday and Thursday preview screenings. Also benefitting from an early opening was The Smurfs, with the little blue fellas amassing a debut of just under £3.8m (including £1.47m of preview screenings) to take second place, pushing box office juggernaut Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 down into third in its fifth weekend on screens. The eighth and final installment is now the highest-grossing movie in the Harry Potter series, while it's total gross of £66.5m places it fifth in the UK's all-time chart behind Titanic, Mamma Mia!, Toy Story 3 and Avatar.

As a result of the two new releases, both Super 8 and Mr Popper's Penguins falls two places apiece to fourth and fifth, while comedy Horrible Bosses holds firm in sixth place. Pixar sequel Cars 2 also slips two places to seventh, a fate shared by Horrid Henry: The Movie and Bridesmaids in ninth and tenth, with Captain America: The First Avenger sandwiched between them in eighth and suffering the steepest drop of the week as the Chris Evans Avengers lead-in falls four spots from last time out.

Number one this time last year: Toy Story 3
