Tomas Alfredson's adaptation of John le Carre's espionage thriller Tinker Tailor Solider Spy jumps straight in at the top of the box office chart in its opening weekend, with the film's stellar cast (including Gary Oldman, Kathy Burke, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, CiarĂ¡n Hinds, John Hurt, Toby Jones and Mark Strong) helping it to a decent haul of £2.8m haul. As a result, The Inbetweeners Movie finally vacates the number one position, dropping to second (and adding another £1.2m to give the British comedy a five-week gross of £41.8m), with Friends with Benefits and Jane Eyre also slipping one place apiece to third and fourth respectively.
In addition to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, three other newcomers manage to make an impression in the top ten, with the Jason Bateman / Ryan Reynolds comedy The Change-Up enjoying the most success in fifth with £727k. Fellow comedy I Don't Know How She Does It pulls in £562k to claim seventh and director Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland follow-up 30 Minutes or Less has to settle for tenth with £260k. Meanwhile The Smurfs falls two places to sixth and Rise of the Planet of the Apes and One Day both go one better, dropping three spots each to finish up in eighth and ninth.
On a final note, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 finally exits the top ten after ten weeks on screens, meaning that last weekend marked the final appearance of J.K. Rowling's Boy Wizard in the UK box office chart (well, at least until WB starts rolling out the 3D re-releases).
