Gulliver travels to the top of the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 31st December 2010 - Sunday 2nd January 2011.

Jack Black enjoyed a fine start to 2011 with the 3D family adventure Gulliver's Travels jumping straight in at the top of the UK box office with a healthy £7m, the highest opening for a film here in the UK since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 burst onto the scene seven weeks back with a mammoth £18.32m.

Gulliver's Travels is joined by two other new releases, the highest of which is the Jake Gyllenhaal / Anne Hathaway romantic comedy Love and Other Drugs, in third place with £1.6m. Meanwhile Peter Weir's latest epic The Way Back pulls in £1.3m to take fourth, which is a good return considering the film received almost half the screenings of its fellow newcomers and the least of all the films in the top ten overall.

Elsewhere in the chart former box office champ Little Fockers slips down to second but adds another £2.6m to its haul to give the comedy sequel £11.1m after just two weekends on release. Also on the decline are The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Tron: Legacy and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, each of which pull in seven figures but fall three places to occupy fifth, sixth and seventh respectively (the weekend returns also push Narnia past the £10m mark, while Harry Potter should hit £50m by the time the next chart rolls around). Meanwhile Megamind, The Tourist and Animals United all slip two spots to occupy the remaining positions at the foot of the chart.
