Perhaps rather surprisingly Tom Hooper enjoyed a clear victory over fellow British director Danny Boyle as his King George VI biopic The King's Speech exceeded all expectations to open in first place at the UK box office with an impressive £3.5m, including £227k of previews. Meanwhile 127 Hours - the true life story of American mountaineer Aron Ralston - was left to settle for second place, pulling in £2.16m to best Boyle's previous effort Slumdog Millionaire, which opened with £1.8m back in 2008.
Two other newcomers also make an appearance in this week's chart, the highest of which is the Russell Crowe thriller The Next Three Days, taking fifth with a fraction over £1m. Meanwhile the critically derided Nicolas Cage action fantasy Season of the Witch has to settle for tenth with £559k.
Elsewhere in the chart comedy sequel Little Fockers slips one place to third and crosses the £15m mark in its third weekend, while last week's top film Gulliver's Travels drops to fourth but pushes its total gross just shy of £11m. Also on the decline is romance Love and Other Drugs (down three to sixth), Tron: Legacy (eighth from sixth last time out) and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (falling four places to ninth), while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 holds firm in seventh and pushes its cumulative gross beyond £50m after eight weeks on screens.

The first blockbuster hopeful of 2011 opens this coming Friday as Seth Rogen takes on the mask of The Green Hornet (cert. 12A) in Michel Gondry's big-budget action comedy, while the pick of the alternatives include Ryan Gosling / Michelle Williams romance Blue Valentine (cert. TBC) and Hilary Swank drama Conviction (cert. 15).
