Anthony Hopkins (Thor, The Silence of the Lambs) and Judi Dench (Quantum of Solace, Notes on a Scandal) are both in talks for the lead roles in an English-language adaptation of Swedish author Henning Mankell’s novel Italian Shoes. Kenneth Branagh (Valkyrie, Hamlet) will direct the film, from a script written by Richard Cottan.
The story follows a retired surgeon living on a remote island in Sweden, who is forced to confront his past mistakes when he's reunited with an old flame. According to Variety, Branagh said the project is "tailor-made" for Hopkins and Dench, and has been developed with them in mind.
The film is being developed by Left Bank Pictures in the UK and Yellowbird in Sweden. Yellowbird also co-produces the TV series Wallander, based on Henning Mankell’s detective novels. Branagh stars as the main character and is the executive producer of the series, which is currently shooting its third season.
Italian Shoes will start filming towards the end of 2012 or in early 2013, depending on the availability of the two veteran British actors.
